Methodology
How we choose
The method behind every pick, in the open — including the parts that are inconvenient for us.
We don't run a testing lab — and we say so
Every ranking site in this category implies a test bench. We don't have one, and we're not going to write "in our testing" as though we do. Here's what we actually do instead: we compile the published specifications (real dimensions, weight, capacity, plug and voltage compatibility, carry-on and TSA compliance), do the arithmetic that matters to a gift buyer(does it fit a carry-on? is it genuinely TSA-friendly? will the adapter work where they're going?), pull live prices so nothing is stale, and tell you plainly who each pick suits and when to skip it.
That restraint is the whole point. A competitor's most falsifiable claim is the one we simply don't make.
The scoring rubric
Every product gets a score out of 10, and that score is the average of five named metrics. The scores are judgments from documented research— not measurements we took in a lab we don't have. Here is exactly what each one means:
- 01
Usefulness
How often a traveler actually reaches for it. A gift that gets used on every trip beats a clever one that lives in a drawer.
- 02
Portability
Whether it packs and carries well for the way this person travels — weight, bulk, and whether it earns its space in a bag.
- 03
Durability
How well it survives real travel: airport handling, a dropped bag, months of use. Warranties count here.
- 04
Value
What you get for the price. The best-value pick often ranks above a pricier one, because paying more isn't the same as getting more.
- 05
Giftability
How well it works as a gift specifically — broad appeal, how it presents when opened, and whether it says "someone thought about this."
Where our facts come from
Product facts — dimensions, weight, capacity, materials, plug types, cabin compliance — come from manufacturer spec sheets and retailer listings, which we name and link in each page's Sources. Where a claim comes from a brand's own marketing, we treat it as a claim, not a measured fact. Where we couldn't verify something, we say so on the page rather than quietly leaving it out.
Where prices come from
Prices render only from live Amazon data and are stamped with the date we last checked. If our data is more than 48 hours old, the number disappears and the button falls back to "Check price on Amazon." We never show a remembered or hand-typed price, because a wrong price is worse than no price.
The claims we refuse to make
- Sponsored placements accepted: none. No brand pays to appear or to rank higher.
- Free products accepted for review: none. There's no free-product bias to have.
- Invented star ratings or review counts: none. We never fabricate social proof.
- "We tested / we own / our lab": never. We research; we don't pretend to bench-test.
How links fund this
When you buy through our Amazon links we earn a small commission at no extra cost to you — and it never changes a pick. See the full affiliate disclosure. Found something wrong? Tell us; we aim to correct factual errors within 48 hours.
